Fantastic Cornbread Recipe

Ever have a hankering for some homemade southern comfort food? if so, this is for you!

Not that I'm from the south or presume to know ANYTHING about southern comfort food, but I'm placing in that category because it only makes sense that it would be.

Cornbread is easy, yummy and you can spread calories butter on it.

Here's what you'll need:

1 1/2 cups cornmeal (found in bags in your baked goods aisle)
2 1/2 cups milk
2 cups all-purpose flour
1 tbsp baking powder
1 tsp salt
2/3 cup white sugar
2 eggs
1/2 cup vegetable/canola oil

Here's what you'll need to do to enjoy this yummy-ness:

1) In a small bowl, combine cornmeal and milk and let it stand for 5 minutes. Grease a 9 X 13 pan.
2) In a large bowl, whisk flour, baking powder, salt & sugar.  Mix in the cornmeal misture, eggs & oil until smooth.  Pour batter into prepped pan.
3) Bake at 350 degrees for 30-35 minutes or until a knife can come out clean.
4) Cut into squares and ENJOY!! Many prefer this served still warm, so serve after it's cooled slightly, or nuke it later if you are one of those that prefer it this way.

Cupcake Invites for one SWEET girl!

So my friend Jen has this fantastic sense of style and taste, and I should have just assumed that it would overpour into her ways as a Mom. She reminded me of that fact when I saw her beautiful invites to her daughter's first birthday. Completely handmade & designed. I'm shouting a huge"kudos" to her for these.
Sophia is a lucky girl!

Thanks, Jen for letting me feature your creativity here!

Don't you just love these?!

And of course, the paper lollipop cupcake toppers *sigh*

New Name, Same Face

Incase you were a former "Frugal Mama" blogspot lover, this is just to inform you that we've had a name change!!

The fact was there were several "frugal mama" blogs out there and it caused some googling confusion. Even for me!!

Enjoy the new stuff to come :)

Fried Tortillas...with cinnamon & sugar!

So, this isn't much of a recipe...more of a "follow me while I try this out" kinda posting. Today I was making quesadillas for my daughter for lunch and decided to slice up one of the tortilla wraps into strips & triangles and fry them up, then sprinkle them with cinnamon & sugar. Turns out, they were pretty fantastic!

What you need:
-Frying pan (pref. non stick)
-Veggie Oil, just enough to coat the pan well!
-Tortillas
-Cinnamon & Sugar mixture

STEP BY STEP (day by day...)
oops...sorry for the 90's sitcom theme now stuck in your head

Slice up tortillas and place in hot oil in pan
Let them brown up on each side (flipping inbetween of course). Careful! this goes fast.
As you will be able to tell in a moment...

Point proven on the "careful they brown fast"... Some were a little too burnt crispy.
But ANYWAYS, make sure you dab of most of the oil onto a paper towel.
mmm...greasy...look at that shine!

Then sprinkle with cinnamon & sugar until well coated and serve :)
Next time I do it, I'll be using a large zip-loc back to make sure they are nice & evenly coated.
But, alas...here they are!! yummy!

Crochet Flower Hats

What can I say, I'm gearing up for fall already!

What I used:
-Kufi Hat (toddler size)
-Bunch of faux flowers from Dollar store ($1)
-Buttons from WalMart ($.80ea)
-Sewing thread & needles

Here's the hats untouched and the supplies:

Next I broke off a flower from it's bunch and used JUST the petals (no green plastic)

Placing the button on the centre of the flower, I sewed a stich through to keep it all together, then sewed it on to the hat.

Here's some more pics. My kids were NOT the best of models for this, so I took a shot of me as well after I squeezed one onto my head.
Which, by the way...it actually would fit quite nicely on someone with a smaller head them me ;)

More of the Ribbon Flip Flops!

So, I'm just going to say that the flip flops went over FAMOUSLY with my daughter. If you have visited our house in the last couple days, you would know...because she breaks them out to show EVERYONE!

Here's a pic of her little piggies trying them on :)

Revamped Flip Flops

My daughter Papaya is in LOVE with flip flops. But the hard thing is, they wear too easy. They look worn out and tired within a week. I recently let her choose a pair of cute ones from Dollarama, but the plastic straps were getting a greenish tinge from the sunlight. So revamp we shall :)

If you are starting from scratch with a NEW pair of flip flops, I'd recommend the Old Navy ones in white or any other solid colour.

You'll need:
Ribbon (mine is all from Dollarama, and a couple spools from Michaels for 89c)
Flip Flops
Scissors

That's it!! It's pretty self-explanatory what to do here, but I'll give a tutorial just to give this blog post some substance.

Here's what we started with:

Next, I got all my ribbon out

Cut about 5 inch long strips (which is longer than the end result but allows for easy tying).
Tie on in no particular order or pattern. Just have fun!

Now trim it up to the desired length

VOILA!

Not to toot my own horn, but these are so cute. I can't wait for Papaya's reaction to these :)
