Updating our Master Bedroom!

So usually updating a room for most means a LOT of work.
Painting, new bedding, new accents, new accessories, new curtains...etc.

But, what happens when the budget is low but you are ITCHING for a change?
It's GOT to happen. Somehow.

It's like when you want a new hair color, but can't afford the salon that day, so you go a little crazy and get the boxed color because it's just GOT TO HAPPEN.
Or take scissors to your own hair because you've been wanting to try bangs.
Don't ask me how I know.

That's what I was recently faced with.
The things I had, and the things I wanted were two totally different things.
Although I loved my room, I didn't have a headboard (was using a folding "screen") and our wall behind our bed is uneven and it was getting more and more frustrating for me to "make it work".

So what did I do?

Well, I did spend SOME money.
One piece.
That's it.
A new bed frame.
I bought it used on Kijiji for $100.
(It's Ikea Lillesand for and retails for $150 + $50 for the bed slats)
I thought I recognized the bed when I was online looking at Ikea stuff, thinking it's one I saw HERE on Signal Hill Interiors, so I messaged my bloggy BFF Courtenay  from SHI and sure enough, it's the same bed.
She recommended it. I trust her.
Now that I have it, I highly recommend this bed too!
It's totally the farmhouse chic I was looking for in a bed and it fit my current mattress & boxspring.
The bed is SO tall, it feels like a hotel. WE LOVE IT!
I bought it with my birthday money, so, it was kinda free!

Although the room isn't complete, here's where we are so far:

So let me break it down for you a little bit.

Here's the
Before:

After:

The details:

Isn't it amazing how much BRIGHTER it seems?
how REFRESHED it looks?
how much more UP TO DATE it is?

Yah, so worth the hoarding not spending any money.

and I KNOW...I KNOW...
I should have ironed the curtains.

and I KNOW...I KNOW...
We need to do SOMETHING with those table lamp shades.

and I KNOW...I KNOW...
We need some more accent pillows or throws or something.

I will keep updating :)
baby steps.

More details and pics!

The Quilt
(to give you a close up of the patterns in the patchwork):

More pics in general :)
I was a little camera happy.

Little accents on the metal bed frame.

and enough of the magazine shots.
Here's real life:

Excuse the messy hair, the no make-up, the eyebrows that need waxing.
I edited out the pimple on my forehead.
(There's just some things that aren't meant to be seen.  Unless you knocked on my door that day, in which case...sorry about your luck)

Onto much cuter:

Here's a little something I'm adding to the bedroom...
(but have yet to decide where...so it's just hanging out)

Little Pier 1 sale
$12 for this beauty (bought with bday money)
Not sure if I'll paint it a whiter white or not yet.

What things have you held onto for years and brought back out time and time again?

Anything you re-purposed that you thought you were "done" with?

Love it! I am jealous. Our bedroom is just a functional room, and dumping grounds for the "don't know where to put it" stuff. I am DYING to make it a real big girl bedroom! Love the bed!

I love the door knob Sarah, can you attach it to your Bdrm door?

It's a keeper!

Looks so good Sarah! We started our bedroom reno 2 weeks before Elle was born and I haven't yet completed...one day. LOVE what you've done. The quilt is gorgeous and I am sure there is tons of love poured into it. We got one for our wedding too which is in our guest room! Love them. And question...why when we want to do something for the house it's OUR birthday money spent? Same deal here. Probably b/c they would still have the same Spiderman sheets their mommy's bought them when they were 5 if it weren't for our Birthdays!

Hey, bed stealer! I feel like I've seen that before somewhere.... hehehe. Love your quilt. And such a good idea to use the curtains for more height. Well done!

I loved that you used things with sentimental value! We recently redid our master bedroom too. We also put curtains behind our bed, even though there are no windows on that wall. Love the idea! :)

Ahh! I saw those door knob thingys at Pier 1 a week or two ago, and I'm still thinking about them! The bedroom is lovely - and I especially like the un-ironed curtains, because I wouldn't iron either :)

I wish I have the time to redecorate our room. I'm really getting bored with it and I think it's time to update it too. I love what you did to your room by the way. It looks simple and refreshing.

Looks great! I am the QUEEN of repurposing things around the house. If I get tired of something or if it doesn't quite "fit", I tuck it away in the closet and later find a "fabulous" new use for it...and that feels AMAZING! I do it ALL OF THE TIME!!! Love your updated bedroom, great job!

Good job on this upgrade work. The before and after pictures definitely shows progress and improvement. I can learn from this.

very nice! another nice, cheap trick ive done is...i always use a simple chocolate brown comforter but i have another comforter that i layer over the chocolate that goes with my sheets. so the chocolate is my main color and i have a set of blue denim colored sheets with a blue, cream and chocolate floral comforter and a set of sheets with brown, blue, and pale green stripes with a pale green comforter. it really freshens the room to be able to change out the whole color scheme everytime i change the sheets!
